Are you curious about the world beyond your doorstep? Have you been longing for lands unknown?
A couple decades ago, I jammed a rusty shovel into the unforgiving earth of my parents’ backyard and declared I was digging a tunnel to China. Seven years ago, I dove into the back of a taxi at the Beijing airport and emerged many miles later in front of rows upon rows of identical apartment buildings. My $5 hostel bed lay hiding inside one of them. With no internet connection and no Mandarin skills, I started knocking. The adventures began.
Four continents and 40 countries later, the adventure is still in its infancy. Over the years, I have drawn inspiration and much need direction from countless travel blogs, particularly as it pertains to circuitous bus routes sans written schedules and insider tips on where to find quiet moments amidst the hubbub of tourist hotspots. Many times I have considered writing a blog of some sort but would always be stifled by the nagging doubt of, “Does the world really need another blog?” (probably not) and, “Aren’t all the cool places ruined by people writing about them and causing everyone to flock there?” (possibly so.)
But in the spirit of the much younger me who would happily put in a week’s worth of hard toil if it meant tunneling to far off lands; who would make my GI Joes and my barbies parachute out of windows on reconnaissance missions; who could never submit to sleep without begging my dad for one more story, I believe the world does in fact need more stories. From everyone and everywhere for as long as there is breath to tell them.
What you won’t find here:
- Photos of me. In our world of hyper-surveillance and constant pressure to perform, privacy is a gift.
- How-to’s and must-do’s. One time I gave a visitor to my home city wrong directions, and I only realized once his train pulled away. This still features in my personal late-night blooper reel.
- AI generated writing or images. Ever.
What you WILL find:
- Field notes from the far flung
- Quick impressions of a place
- Praise of cute cafes and eateries I liked
- Human to human moments that have impacted me
- Short stories inspired by places I visit and people I meet
- Gratitude
I hope you like what you discover here. And if you don’t thank you for visiting all the same. The adventure will continue as long as there is breath in my laughter and tea in cup. Do come along. The world awaits.
